Na weken, wat zeg ik, maanden van afwezigheid is het tijd voor een recensie. En als ik dan terug van weggeweest ben, dan moet ik natuurlijk wel met een parel van een boek komen. Dus Spijkerschrift it is! 😉 Sorry jongens, ik zal jullie nooit meer 5 maanden laten wachten.

Soms, heel soms gebeurd het dat je per ongeluk jaren lang een boek in de kast hebt. Ongelezen, onder het stof met een vergeelde prijssticker. Je weet eigenlijk niet zo goed waarom hij ongelezen is. Waarschijnlijk was de tijd er niet naar. Soms voelt het gewoon niet goed om aan een boek te beginnen. Het is te zwaar, of misschien te licht. Je kent het wel. Vorige week was ik op zoek naar het boek van mijn moeder toen Spijkerschrift van Kader Abdolah ineens afgedankt op de vloer lag. Niet oké! Het voelde alsof het nu wel de juiste tijd was om hem te lezen. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Lees in deze recensie wat ik van het boek vind.

Mijn eerste indruk van Spijkerschrift

Een gefrustreerde zoon, die in het reine probeert te komen met het verleden door het spijkerschrift van zijn doofstomme vader op papier te zetten. Is het niet interessant dat wanneer ik zoek naar het boek van mijn moeder, ik een boek met dit onderwerp vind? Het maakte me nieuwsgierig. Al na een paar pagina’s lees ik de volgende prachtige zin; “Zijn wereld was de wereld van zijn verleden, van wat voorbij was, van wat hij had geleerd en van zijn herinneringen. De weken, maanden en jaren kende hij niet. Tijd had voor hem geen betekenis”. Ik heb de zin drie keer gelezen, prachtig! Dit belooft veel goeds.

Waar het boek over gaat

Deze autobiografische roman bevat veel dingen. Liefde, verraad, dood en religie in een even sprookjesachtige als woelige setting. Daar waar politiek, geschiedenis, aardrijkskunde, religie, vluchtelingen en ontheemding een grote rol spelen. Ondertussen vertelt het ook een persoonlijk verhaal over een geschoolde man, Ismaiel en zijn vader Aga Akbar, de doofstomme tapijtmaker.

Aga Akbar heeft in de loop van zijn leven een boek geschreven in een eigen ontworpen spijkerschrift. Na zijn dood in de bergen wordt het boek bij zijn naar Nederland gevluchte zoon Ismaiel bezorgd. Ismaiel probeert het leesbaar te maken, net zoals hij zijn vader vroeger verstaanbaar moest maken. Zo tovert Kader Abdolah het leven van Aga Akbar en zijn zoon Ismaiel tevoorschijn.

Via de persoonlijke geschiedenis van zijn familie en ouderlijk huis schetst hij tevens de recente geschiedenis van de 20e eeuw. Historische gebeurtenissen en sociale veranderingen wisselen elkaar af. De twee sjahs, Mossadegh en Khomeini nemen hun tijd op het podium, elk hun sporen achterlatend. De Sovjet-Unie doemt op langs de grens; Saddam Hussein verklaart de oorlog; het westen haalt olie op. Kortom een verwarrende wereld voor een man die niet kan horen of praten, met een zoon die links georiënteerd is en hem zelfs ge/misbruikt in zijn revolutionaire strijd.

Wat ik ervan vond

Een goede roman schrijven is één ding. Een goede roman schrijven in een taal die niet jouw eerste taal is, is iets anders. Dat is, naar mijn mening, een knap staaltje meesterwerk! Kader Abdolah zegt vaak dat hij in het begin van zijn carrière in het Nederlands maar een beperkt aantal woorden beschikbaar had. Het is precies dat wat naar mijn mening veel heeft bijgedragen aan zijn onderscheidende, poëtische stijl. Waar veel Nederlandse schrijvers zoveel mogelijk moeilijke woorden op een pagina gooien om iets simpels te vertellen, weet Kader jou alles te vertellen met weinig woorden. Ontzettend mooi! Daarnaast is het interessant dat hij de rijke geschiedenis van zijn land tussen de regels door vlecht in een krachtig familieverhaal, zonder dat het “Wikipedia-achtig” aanvoelt.

De verschillende personages, onder meer de dichtende oom Azem Khan en Ismaiels zusje Goudklokje zijn interessant, maar het is vooral de vader-zoon verhouding die het boek doet leven. Het omvat de complexiteit van gevoelens binnen hun relatie, maar is tegelijkertijd ingetogen en liefdevol.

De conclusie van Spijkerschrift

Het mysterie binnen het verhaal is ons onvermogen om te weten wat Aga Akbar denkt en voelt. Hij zit gevangen in een zintuiglijke wereld zonder gehoor of spraak en communiceert via eenvoudige gebarentaal. De roman doet geen poging om zijn werkelijke ervaring weer te geven. En dat maakte het voor mij moeilijk om me met hem te identificeren. Dit is voor het eerst dat een karakter mijlenver van mij afstaat en dat maakte me enorm nieuwsgierig. Ik wilde alleen maar meer van hem weten, meer voelen, meer verstaan. Ja, Spijkerschrift is een ontroerend boek, een knap boek. Een boek dat het verdient om nog door velen gelezen te worden. Dus ga naar die boekhandel en koop hem!

Beoordeling

After reading and loving A man called Ove, this book – Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine – was recommended to me. It had already been on my to-read list, so now I finally got around to read it!
By the way, if you are wondering why an elephant is portrayed on the picture: the Dutch word for elephant is ‘Olifant’. Olifant, Oliphant, Tomato, Tomato.

My first impression

Ahh, Eleanor, what happened to you? She is lonely, the oddball at work and in the weekend she eats pizza and drinks vodka alone until Monday comes around. She upholds a rigorous routine and her life is sort of empty. The character feels very real so I am curious to find out how she will develop throughout the book!

The story

Eleanor lives a lonely and orderly life. Apart from the call with her mum on Wednesdays, she doesn’t speak to anyone outside the office. You wonder if her behavior is due to a mental disorder or that life shaped her this way.

Her routine and orderly life gets shaking up when she and a colleague save a man who falls down on the street. It is the start of Eleanor having social interaction and learning social conventions. She even imagines herself being a couple with a musician she saw at a concert. Moreover, she does new things such as asking the colleague (Raymond) out for lunch.

The getting used-to of this new way of life and the reason for her behavior are gradually unpicked during the book. It ends with a plot-twist that I did not see coming.

My opinion

This book is amazing. It is very funny and at same the time it’s tragic. The tragic is really tragic, but somehow it is not written in a way that makes you depressed as is done in A little life for example.

The characters development is written in just the perfect pace, which allows you to really root for her. Once you start reading this book, it is hard to put away. Moreover, Eleanor is hilarious, even when that’s not always what she means to be.

This book is about loneliness, development, kindness and social ties. Raymond, her colleague, is at the heart of her development. Sometimes, or maybe always, we need someone to care, even if it’s just 1 person.

Conclusion

A funny, strong and impressive book. I would definitely recommend it! Finishing this book feels like having to say goodbye to all those marvelous characters. I would have loved to read even more about them. 🙂

Verdict

Scandinavian writers somehow know how to write a good book. At least, this is my experience, but I probably just read a small fraction of Scandinavian authors. Of course, they must be good in order for them to be translated into English or Dutch. Anyhow, I was very eager to read this one because I read so many positive reviews! Was it as good? Let’s find out!

My first impression

My first chuckle was while reading the first page. Okay, this must be good! My first emotion was not long after. Wow, this book seems to be funny and emotional at the same time. A heartfelt read!

The story

Ove is a man set in his ways. He loves his routine and likes to complain about the world around him. However, soon you find out that there is more to him. He loves and misses his late wife. She was “the color” in his life. This love is endearing and feels very pure. He doesn’t really want to go on without her.

Ove didn’t have the easiest life, working from a young age and being betrayed multiple times. He handles it quite well by moving on, but the reader is left with feelings.

The main character Ove is withdrawn, until new neighbors move in. He learns he actually does not dislike the woman (Parvaneh) and the kids are okay too. The man remains a doofus in his eyes. Parvaneh challenges him to come out of the house, help others and live life. The friendship that unfolds is heartwarming.

The story is about life, love, loneliness, friendship, human connections and challenges.

My opinion

I simply love this book. I think it’s special that a book can make you laugh and nearly cry. The book touches your heart to the core!

The character Ove is developed well and throughout the story you grow more fond of him with every page you turn. Ove is the person you’d like have as your neighbor or grandfather. It is also endearing that Parvaneh encourages him to live, even if it irritates Ove in the beginning. Everyone needs a Parvaneh now and then.

This book is amazing. It is hilarious, heartfelt and it makes you feel all the feelings. Moreover, the characters and the story are developed well and the writing is great. I would highly recommend this book! I am sure I will read it many more times. The story somehow really stays with you for a while. Perhaps because the book is deeply human.
